The best mudroom for a Buffalo winter is a drop zone at your most-used door with open lockers so gear can dry, a bench with boot storage, a waterproof boot tray and hooks at two heights. Plan about 15 to 18 inches of width per person.
Western New York winters are hard on entryways. When the November 2022 lake-effect storm buried Orchard Park under roughly 80 inches of snow, every family in the Southtowns found out how well their back door handles wet boots, snow pants and shovels. Here’s how we design mudrooms that hold up.
1. Put it where people actually come in
Most families use the garage or side door, not the front door. Build the drop zone there, even if it’s a hallway or a corner of the laundry room. A beautiful front-hall bench nobody walks past won’t catch any slush.
2. Choose open lockers over closed doors
Closed cabinets trap moisture. Wet gloves and snow pants need air to dry, so we design open cubbies with a top cubby for hats and gloves, a double hook for coats and backpacks, and an open space below for boots.
3. Plan for real gear
- Hockey bags need a deep bottom cubby or a spot in the garage.
- Snow pants and bibs go on low hooks kids can reach.
- Boot trays should slide out for cleaning, and we size the cubby above them so tall boots fit.
- Shovels and salt live in the garage, on slatwall hooks near the door.
4. Size it per person
Give each family member a locker about 15 to 18 inches wide. A family of four fits on a 6- to 7-foot wall. Even a 4-foot wall holds two lockers and a bench.
5. Pick finishes that can be wiped down
Melamine and textured laminate finishes handle wet gear far better than raw wood. Choose a slightly darker or textured finish near the floor, where salt spray hits.
6. Add a charging cubby and a mail slot
A mudroom becomes the family command center. A cubby with a cutout for a power strip keeps phones charging out of the way, and a small shelf catches mail and keys.
Custom mudroom lockers in the Buffalo area typically run $2,400 – $6,500 for three or four lockers with a bench. See mudroom designs or estimate your project.
