How Buffalo prices compare

  • National average: HomeAdvisor’s 2026 cost guide puts the average custom closet at $2,136, with most projects between $1,080 and $3,229. That average includes many small reach-ins.
  • Per foot: Fixr estimated about $150 to $450 per linear foot of wall in January 2025, the same range our estimator uses.
  • Big-box stores: Home Depot publishes custom closet tiers of $1,000–$4,000, $4,000–$8,000 and $8,000+, with lead times of 5 to 10 weeks (checked October 2026).
  • National franchises: usually quote at the visit, often as a percentage off a list price. Ask for the price without the promotion so you can compare.

What drives the price

1. Linear feet of wall

This is the biggest factor. Every foot of wall you fill needs panels, shelves and rods. A 6-foot reach-in has about 6 linear feet; a 6×8 walk-in with three usable walls has about 20.

2. Drawers and doors

Open shelving and hanging space are the most economical. Drawers and doors take more material, hardware and labor, so we place them where they matter most: socks and underwear at hip height, sweaters behind doors to keep dust off.

3. Finish and hardware

White and wood-look melamine sit at the low end. Textured woodgrains, painted-look finishes, glass fronts and premium handles add cost. Your designer brings samples so you can compare them in your own light.

4. Lighting and extras

Motion-sensor LED strips, islands, valet rods, jewelry trays and pull-out hampers are upgrades you can add now or later. A good design leaves room to add them.

How to get the most closet for your budget

  • Spend on drawers where you use them daily, and use open shelves everywhere else.
  • Choose a mid-range finish for the system and upgrade only the drawer fronts you see first.
  • Run double-hang wherever you can. Most wardrobes are mostly shirts and pants, and double-hang nearly doubles capacity.
  • Do multiple closets in one visit. Installing two or three in a day is more efficient than separate trips.
Is a custom closet worth it?

Buyers notice storage. A well-planned primary closet photographs well for a listing, and day to day, it saves the time spent digging for things. We’ll always show you a simpler option alongside the dream version.

Watch out for these

  • Discounts off a list price nobody pays. Ask what the regular price is and whether the sale has an actual end date.
  • Deferred-interest financing. Find out what happens if the balance isn’t paid off before the promotion ends.
  • Missing contract terms. New York home improvement contracts must list dates and a payment schedule, and give you three business days to cancel.
